HOT PLATES: Last Night By The River

Thanks to the good people at The Delaware River Waterfront!
I attended their media day yesterday and got a sneak peak at the great food choices available this summer on The Delaware River Waterfront...
Cheese Steaks, Ice Cream, Chicken Sandwiches, HOT fish, and much more!
Tune in to The Light Next Friday, May 6th for the premiere edition of Hot Plates, and it's all about what to eat on Philly's Delaware River Waterfront!

Though we did not get the full experience because of the weather, we had a wonderful time inside the beautiful Independence Seaport Museum!

You can catch Hot Plates next Friday Saturday and Sunday
on AM 1620, FM 91.7 WLFR and FM 96.1 WTTH

Let The Dead...REST or Nobody made YOU JUDGE

This one is dedicated to my "special" folk.
You know the folks that always say the music YOU listen to is wrong. Don't matter that you are grown, got good credit and have kids that are on the honor roll.

This one is for the folks that wait for you to not refer to a woman as the most high God Queen, and if you make a peep about your wife cheating with your best friend, will tell you..."You want your wife to be a slave...AND YOU HATE WOMEN."

This is for the man...that turns every conversation, Malcolm X quote and Bible text into justification for having more than one woman.

And lastly, this is for my MOST special people, that would see a man with his head cut off and say..."See if you was a vegan, that wouldn't have happened."

I am writing this because I am sick of the people that always sit in judgment.

I am writing this because today I saw a post on facebook asking "Can you be a famous musician and not be hooked on drugs? Name one."

I almost lost my mind.

First let me say that I am not blind to the fact that Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Elvis Pressley all died from prescription drug over doses.

Let me say next...that the life style and road schedule of a musician is harder than most people think it is.

Let me also say that at the age that Whitney, Michael, Elvis and Prince were.....more Americans than not are using some kind of medication just for day to day management.

I read where Prince was in need a of double hip replacement.

That kind of pain is not managed by carrots, kale and 8 quarts of water a day.

Likewise, those of us not dealing with physical pain...may need help managing the mental and emotional pain living America brings.

Please remember that when you are looking down your nose at some one with a cigarette, cigar or joint.

Try to remember that not drinking alcohol is no more the key to a happy life than a six pack a day habit is.

Please remember that eating as natural as possible is a beautiful thing, but you will still age, go grey, slow down and in many cases need some type of meds before you die...

Lastly if denying yourself sugar, booze, sex, and always talking about a higher power...will not make you a better person than the next....being judgmental of people sure will not make you better...even if you are blessed by God to live a little longer.

Boogie Nights Honors the Late Prince

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (April 25, 2016) — In honor of the late legendary musical icon Prince, Boogie Nights at Tropicana will host A Tribute to Prince Saturday, April 30th.

Known for evoking the fun and nostalgia of the 70s and 80s, Boogie Nights will put their signature flair on the event featuring performances by their Prince impersonator, Arlin Padilla. Special touches including an extended soundtrack of Prince’s greatest songs and music videos as well as themed drink specials will complete the tribute.

Padilla has been a staple impersonator at Boogie Nights since 2008. “My favorite part about performing as Prince is that I get to honor someone that I absolutely admire,” says Padilla. “Prince was magical, and when I perform as him I get to feel that magic. It's surreal to be able to travel around the country and perform as someone you idolize.”

Prince sold more than 100 million records during his four-decade career, earning seven Grammys and one Oscar for his Purple Rain score.

Padilla recalls, “I was blessed to have seen him in concert a few years ago. It was the most amazing concert I've ever been to. The energy was electric. I mean you could just feel the entire arena come alive when he took the stage.”

“When you perform as your idol, you spend a lot of time studying them; their movements, their attitude, basically everything, it's like losing a close friend. It's a strange feeling,” Padilla says. “I have no doubt that my first time performing in my Prince costume is going to be emotional for me. He will live on through his music, and performing in his likeness is the best way I can honor him,” he continues.

Prince fans can see Arlin as Prince at A Tribute to Prince, Saturday, April 30th at 10pm at Boogie Nights. Cover charge is $15 at the door. Must be 21.

About Last Night....or It's OUR SHOW!!!!!

Very few people truly know me. Even fewer "UNDERSTAND" me.

When I am in the radio station I am apt to say every one is welcome, should have a good time, should shine, but I do say..."it's my show."

That is true but not the truth.

The shows I produce are my shows from the stand point of I write the checks that keep the shows on the air, I make deals with sponsors to keep the shows on the air, I smile while people I have helped slam doors in my face to keep the show on the air.

It's my show.

I also bear the blame of everything that didn't go right.
Food in the studio? That's on Raymond.
Somebody curse by mistake? That's on Raymond.
A guest is upset because they felt they should have gotten 5 more minutes? That's On Raymond.
And I could go on.

It's true that the shows I produce are Raymond's shows. Cause...almost every week...someone explains to me what Raymond did Wrong.

HOW EVER!

THE TRUTH IS.....that there are many great people that are responsible for the radio I am blessed to be able to produce.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT

Last night on the Weekend Lounge , I was lucky enough to have Michelle Moseley sit in and co host with me. For about 3 years straight Moseley and Larry Lee helped me build an audience at FM 91.7 WLFR every Friday Morning!

The 3 of us welcomed wonderful guests and talked our way through serious subjects like suicide and domestic violence. We also had a lot of fun.

And we pushed that show as far as we could with in the limits of what you can say on public radio waves.

Michelle's hard work and spark on FM 91.7 WLFR helped me achieve and the impact of her work still helps me years after she's been gone.

Last night was about paying respect.

And not for nothing. There are a lot of other people that need to show both Michelle and Larry more respect for what they have done for South Jersey!

To some it may have seemed like I was gushing and that no one ever did anything for me but Michelle. Not true. I was just making sure that my partner knows that I recognize her talent and her contribution to what I have  and enjoy today!

__________________________________________________________________________________

That being said. I want to take this moment to also recognize several other important people.

Larry Lee-The average person reading this will NEVER know the contributions he's made to my radio career. However, I would like to thank him for amazing remix tributes he's done for Mary J Blige, B.I.G and Michael Jackson. And for discussing race and education and politics in ways you almost never here DJ's ...talk about ...those issues.

My former Interns -Erica Bell-Henry my first. As well as all the others. Your hard work will live forever in my heart. I am proud of all of you and what you brought.

Turkessa Lee and Liz Rozier-Yall the one's that started this Saturday Night....Cocktail Party on radio atmosphere...and I love you both and Saturday Nights.

Cheryl B. Sellers-She is my right and sometimes LEFT hand as well.

When you hear me on the radio. All of these people have played important roles in my success.
Every radio show I do it can be said is our success.

Lastly I want to offer my BIGGEST thanks to my current Microphone Super Friends....Stella, Tahira and Roz!

First: I appreciate you guys listening and not slapping me upside the head while I spent most of last night playing "remember when" with Moseley.

I was not unaware that YOU 3 are riding with me NOW! And that we are building something even greater than what has been done before.

You ladies are great professionals and I have never had anyone work as hard or be as dedicated to our collective brand and you 3!

Last night was about paying respect.
Every day now, however I find myself on a microphone and I am super excited to do so because I am working with great women like yourselves.

I could truly do a show every day about how wonderful you are and the great things we have lined up for the future.
Maybe one day I will.

For now....we still got a whole lot of work to get done in front of us and no time to look at the rear view.

JUST KNOW. I VALUE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!
And I respect every precious moment you dedicate to OUR VISION!
I appreciate you all more every day and I do know how blessed I am to be working with you.
I have yet to find a way to make the people I work with day in and day out ...feel how much they mean to me...in the moment...every moment.
However, believe me I will continue to try.

THANK YOU
STELLA
ROZ
TAHIRA
Let's keep making history!

Facts and Brass Tacks Number One: KOBE BRYANT is OVER RATED

Call me a hater all you wish.
That is your right.
I however have been watching NBA Ball and a serious fan of basket ball in general since 1978.
That being said, I must admit that KOBE BRYANT is/was an amazing talent and great player.

However, all the fuss that was made about him this week has been less about his talent or impact on the game and more about ESPN wanting to use Kobe to rewrite history.

While Kobe was a great scorer and an okay defender...He is not in my top ten all time.
First here's my case for why I just don't like Kobe the ball player.

1.Kobe never made one player on his team better. Not ever, not on any team he played for.
(This in my mind automatically put him behind Magic Johnson , Larry Bird and Isaiah Thomas)

2. Kobe ran Shaq, Gasol, Bynum and Dwight Howard out of town.
Once Kobe got rid of Shaq...he was constantly looking for a new Shaq.

3. Kobe and Shaq could have been the greatest dynasty since the Celtics.
See above.

4. Kobe and Shaq played together with awesome talent and couldn't make The Western Conference Finals.
If Kobe was as great as they made him out to be. He would have won with Eddie Jones, Ced Cebalos and Nick Van Exel.

5. Over all...I feel Kobe has done more to set the Lakers back and undermine his own winning.

6. On all 5 championship teams he was a part of...he depended on the bigs he ran out of town.
Shaq was the MVP of the first three runs. And with out Andrew Bynam to check Kevin Garnette , The Lakers would have lost back to back years to Boston.

No I am not a hater.

Kobe was not a scrub or merely a good player.
However, the demi god treatment he got this week was not the Kobe I remember as a Laker either.

Wrestling Fans get Ready For Wizard World Philly!

Wrestling fans will have the rare opportunity to meet WWE® Superstars John Cena® and Sheamus™ and Divas The Bella Twins at Wizard World Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Cena will attend on Sunday, June 5, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; The Bellas will also be on site on Sunday, from 12:30-4 p.m.; and Sheamus will appear on Friday, June 3, from 4-7 p.m.
They will greet fans, pose for photo ops, sign autographs and conduct interactive Q&A panels.

Cena is a 15-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion, five-time U.S. Champion and record-setting Make-A-Wish granter. He’s won the Royal Rumble Match twice. He’s competed in 12 straight WrestleManias and counting, and — more than a decade into his tenure — he hasn’t slowed down a step. If you really can’t see John Cena at this point, chances are you simply aren’t looking.

With a red-hot temper that matches his fiery head of hair, Sheamus never backs down from a fight, and has never been in one he didn’t think he could win. Hailing from Dublin, the ginger-headed juggernaut brings to the ring a ferocious offensive style that harkens to his noble and heroic Celtic ancestors. Whether by upbringing or by birthright, this modern-day Irish warrior was fated for combat.

As one-half of the dazzling Bella Twins, Brie debuted on SmackDown in 2008, defeating her first opponent, Victoria, by way of “Twin Magic” — a move in which she and her identical sister, Nikki, secretly switched places during matches. In 2011, the sneaky tactic helped Brie defeat Eve to win the Divas Championship. Every bit as cunning as she is cute, this half-Mexican, half-Italian beauty, along with her doppelgänger, has truly blazed a path for female athletes to follow over the years, both inside and outside the squared circle.

Bella-Twins-2016-333.jpg
If there’s a barrier to be broken or an accolade to be earned, Nikki Bella has done it, and done it with style. A self-admitted "tomboy" with a feminine side, Nikki originally planned to play professional soccer until a leg injury ended her career. From there, she followed her twin sister Brie’s lead into WWE. Unsuccessful in seizing spots in the 2006 WWE Raw Diva Search, The Bellas caught the eyes of execs and soon landed in FCW. Training for the competition they’d soon crush (while male WWE fans formed crushes on them), Nikki and her sibling made their way onto the main roster in 2008 and turned heads whenever they set foot inside the ring.

The four join an amazing lineup of superstar entertainers scheduled to attend the pop culture extravaganza, including Marvel movie standouts Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, David Duchovny ("The X-Files"), the Back to the Future trio of Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson and "The Walking Dead" standout Norman Reedus , along with many other headliners.

Wizard World comic con and gaming events bring together thousands of fans of all ages to celebrate the best in pop-fi, pop culture, movies, graphic novels, cosplay, comics, television, sci-fi, toys, video gaming, gaming, original art, collectibles, contests and more. Philadelphia show hours are Thursday, June 2, 3-8 p.m.; Friday, June 3, noon-7 p.m.; Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sunday, June 5, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Question Of The Day: Where Do Rank Iverson as a Sixer and Hoya?

On The Afternoon Special on 1620 Urban Classics tomorrow I will be talking Allen Iverson...going into The Hall Of Fame. He deserves that. So let's debate these two issues.

1. Among The Georgetown Hoya greats where you rank Allen Iverson?

Number Two. Among all the great Sixers what number would you rate Allen Iverson?

National Poetry Month Poem Number 2....GIFTS

Four years ago, today, God decided to call my father to rest. I have other pictures of my father and I.
I , however do not have others of us both looking so dapper.

Before I get to this poem.

I want to thank my family. My mom, my brother and his wife, my niece, my surviving aunts, cousins, and all my family.

I want to thank Michelle Davis my stylist at the time for putting me in this wonderful suit, that my father loved more than I did. (Dressing up was his thing.)

I want to thank Dr. Beverly Vaughn, we were just coming back from one of her concerts when we took this picture.

Make memories today with those you love because you never think you will be here writing about some one ...four year after they have gone.

GIFTS (for Raymond Tyler, SR.)

TOYS
I no longer have
The Godzilla
ACTION FIGURE
I got that Christmas
I will remember almost every hour
we "destroyed"
Japan
California
and
some other cities I made up just to have
Godzilla smash over and over again...
I still have the wild imagination of a 9 year old
with a plastic fire breathing lizard
and I thank you for...
encouraging IMAGINATION

I never got that swing set I wanted in the back
"yard"
I had pretty much outgrown
"do it yourself"
playgrounds
by the time I could spell playground
But
you never made me feel like a
FREAK
even when I felt like a
FREAK
always
TOO TALLL
always
TOO BIGGG
never able to Kid Around
with other KIDS
you helped me be more than just
some adjectives they use for 6ft teens... AND
You did buy me that
Basket Ball Hoop and put that in our yard
you taught me that even when I feel like a
"monster"
to feel sad for the people that would only be able to see
"how tall"
"how big"
"how strong"
and never be able to feel
"how kind"
"how loving"
"how funny"

GIFTS
I Don't Have The Happy Days Pin Ball Machine Anymore
I could probably retire on it if I did
I will always have the memory of you putting it together
at 3:45 am on a Christmas Morning

GIFTS
I don't have one ball or glove left
that you bought me
I will always have the many hours we talked about life and the future
while playing catch
and the memory of you
being at base ball games I barely played in
Gifts
The Art Supplies
The Classes
My Brother
The Example Of What The Word
FATHER
Means

no gift
that I could put in my pocket
or throw in a toy chest
or event deposit in my bank account
lasted that long
but the spirit
the love that was given
with the
balls, bats, books
lizards, comics, paints
records, posters, dollars
are still
brand new and just as precious
in my heart
(it's corny
but...true story)
